Safe Water Systems

Uganda Village Project excels at finding low-cost and community-based solutions for clean water and sanitation. We have spent a number of years investigating community sanitation needs and water contamination issues, and worked with community members to devise new and exciting solutions for these widespread and deadly problems.

Our main focuses are the promotion and distribution of a ‘household Safe Water System product’ called WaterGuard, and the prevention of home contamination of water. Waterguard is a hypochlorite additive which can disinfect many liters of water for just a few cents cost. This makes it a realistic weapon against diarrheal diseases which commonly kill Ugandan children (17% of all under-5 deaths in Uganda are attributed to diarrheal diseases) and the elderly, as well as weakening adults and preventing them from working to support their families.

Uganda Village Project has also conducted research to determine the root causes of contamination of water in the home. Safe water sources are useless if water is contaminated in the home, which often happens when children and adults dip their unwashed hands in the water while scooping it out of clay storage pots with a cup. With much community help and feedback, we found that a ladle could be made from locally-grown gourds to prevent this contamination from happening!

Small sanitation and hygiene interventions like WaterGuard and household invterventions like gourd ladles and modified clay pots- combined with education and outreach programs -  are realistic, effective, and represent a revolution in public health for villagers in Igangan villages.
