One Household's Story: Less than 50% of Iganga's households have latrines, and the communities in our Healthy Villages Program were in the lowest quartile for latrine coverage in the district. Here, an elderly man and his wife stand in front of their home at the beginning of Uganda Village Project's sanitation campaign in their community. Notice the degradation of the mud walls around the doorway.

Kitchen Construction: In Iganga, 'kitchens' are small huts alongside the main homestead where cooking takes place. Part of our sanitation campaign encourages the construction of such freestanding kitchen huts.
-
Construction in Progress: The elderly man works through the day to construct a kitchen hut for his wife. This photo shows him filling in all the cracks between the bricks with mud.
-
A Proud Cook: The elderly wife proudly cooks her first meal in the newly constructed kitchen.
-
Closeup of the Cook: A closer photo shows the elderly woman cooking lunch inside her new kitchen hut.
-
A Demonstration: Uganda Village Project staff members demonstrate filling in the cracks between the bricks with mud packing. Looking at the camera is Patrick Tulibagenyi, UVP Safe Water Program Coordinator.

Remodeling The UVP staff all lend a hand to repair the elderly couple's doorway.
-
Like A New Home: The elderly couple's home has been refinished - mosquitos carrying malaria will find it more difficult to get inside the walls of this home now.
-
A Photo Together: UVP staff members Julius and Titus posing with the elderly woman after the work is done.
-
Testing the Tippy Tap: The man has also constructed a 'tippy tap' - a makeshift handwashing device that holds soap and water. The foot pedal empties water from a bottle onto the user's hands. The structure next to the tippy tap is the newly constructed plate stand, to keep serving plates off the ground.
-
Sanitation Improvements: A view of the new kitchen hut, plate stand, and tippy tap.
-
Fetching the Water: The elderly man cleans his jerrycan prior to fetching water from a UVP-constructed well near his home.
-
All in a Day's Work: The elderly couple relax at their newly improved home.
