Safe Pregnancy
In rural parts of Uganda, women’s access to family planning advice and contraception is limited. A 2006 report from Young, Empowered and Healthy – Uganda noted that by age 15, 30% of women in Uganda have had sexual intercourse and by age 17, 43% have had their first child. Only 10% of 15 to 19 year olds utilize modern family planning methods, despite near universal knowledge of those methods.
Uganda Village brings health centre nurses to our villages to conduct community outreach sessions on family planning, birth spacing, and birth control options. The nurses educate community members on various methods of birth control, answer questions, attempt to dispel myths about birth control, and, at the end of the session, offer personal consultations and free birth control options to all women who wish to participate in the program. We bring the nurses back to our villages quarterly to maintain a consistent supply of birth control and conduct follow up education sessions. We also help rural women to access semi-annual camps held by Reproductive Health Uganda.
By partnering with local health centres, we keep the cost of this project to a minimum and maximize its effectiveness. By giving $50 you will give family planning education and birth control to an entire village for three months.
