Heal Obstetric Fistula
Virtually unheard of in wealthier nations, obstetric fistula is caused by prolonged, obstructed labor. Uganda has been reported to have the third-highest rate of fistula in the world. We are working to heal women in Iganga District of fistula, by transporting them at Kamuli Mission Hospital, where they receive surgery provided by the UK-based non-profit group Uganda Childbirth Injuries Fund. In Uganda, all hospital patients must arrive with a friend to feed, attend and nurse them, and so we also transport one attendant for each patient and cover food for the patient and attendant. We also conduct follow up to ensure safe recovery.
Besides helping women to access surgery, we also educate women through our ‘Healthy Villages’ program (and through radio shows) about the childbirth risks associated with obstetric fistula, and how to best prevent fistula. We have also worked with local health centers and village traditional birth attendants, ensuring that they are aware of and can recognize the condition, and asking them to refer any women with fistula to us.
For just $60, you can give a new life to one woman by facilitating surgery, community outreach and follow up.
